“From Civil Rights to Megachurches” (p 96-103)

In the writing From Civil Rights to Megachurches by Duhigg, he points out many similarities that must take place in order for social change throughout a community that Anna Hallward the author of the TedTalk How telling our Silence Stories can Change the World. Duhigg and Hallward both speak of benefits of an open and accepting community. Duhigg  informs readers of the process for the successful change in law and social culture of a community. Duhigg states, “Movements dot emerge because everyone suddenly decides to face the same direction at once. They rely on social patterns that begin as the habits of friendship, grow through the habits of communities, and are sustained by new habits that change participants’ sense of self”(102). Duhigg speaks of social habits and how once a social habit is formed in a friendship it turns into social pattern and then into a social change than can lead to nation wide change but it takes time and effort for a successful change. Alike Duhigg, Hallward believes that social change starts with in friendships and can truly blossom into a cultural change. Hallward explains this by stating, “But lastly when we tell these kinds of stories, it begins to change the culture. One story is like someone opening that door and then other peoples voice can come through that door and it becomes safer and safer for more and more people to live in he open”(6.40). Both authors explained the benefits and the first step of social change that can occur when people just start talking about there feelings within friendships. This is the first step to social change within a community and then a country.
